World Cup Draw, Netflix, and Michael Jordan
December 7, 2025
I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving with your families and got a chance to truly recharge. It’s always such a great time of year, and I, for one, will never complain about the delicious food that comes with it.
Here at mogul, the break was nice, but it also couldn’t go by fast enough. We were all eager to get back into the swing of things and continue the incredible momentum we’ve been building together. It’s been such a great ride, and the best part is it’s only getting started.
Anyway, that’s enough from me, let’s get into it.

⚖️ Supreme Court Lets Texas Use GOP‑Leaning Map — The U.S. Supreme Court has cleared the way for Texas to implement its newly drawn congressional map, overturning a lower court ruling that had flagged it as a likely racial gerrymander. The 6–3 decision from the Court’s conservative majority argued that the lower court had improperly intervened in an active election campaign. The map is expected to give Republicans up to five additional seats in the House, giving the party a significant advantage heading into the 2026 midterm elections.
Netflix’s historic move

Netflix's $82.7B acquisition of Warner Bros. studios, HBO, and HBO Max is official. This represents a calculated response to intensifying competition and subscriber fatigue in streaming. With Netflix's almost 300 million global users facing fragmented libraries across multiple platforms, combining Warner's iconic franchises addresses a core pain point of viewers having to juggle multiple subscriptions.
Financial Engineering and Market Dynamics
The deal's structure, first spinning off Warner's cable assets (CNN, TNT, Discovery+) into Discovery Global by Q3 2026, then acquiring the rest for $27.75 per share ($72B equity value), minimizes legacy drag while maximizing synergies.
Netflix anticipates $2-3B in annual cost savings by year three through shared production and licensing efficiencies, plus earnings accretion by year two. This follows a fierce bidding war where Netflix outbid Paramount and Comcast, signaling investor confidence in scale amid cord-cutting.
Competitive Pressures Driving Consolidation
Traditional studios like Warner have struggled with the post-2022 streaming pivot, with HBO Max's churn rates hitting 10-11% quarterly versus Netflix's much smaller 4-5%. The move counters this by creating a content fortress, where Warner adds 100,000+ hours of premium library to Netflix's originals, potentially capturing a staggering stronghold of the U.S. streaming share.
However, it also accelerates industry realignment: other major players in the space like Apple, Paramount and Amazon, now feel the pressure to make moves of their own in a market where 65% of households now hold 3+ subscriptions.
Risks, Regulatory Hurdles, and Long-Term Outlook
Antitrust scrutiny definitely looms large with this one, as FTC and EU reviews could impose divestitures, with Netflix's dominance raising inevitable monopoly fears.
Yet, if approved in 12-18 months, this historic move truly cements Netflix as Hollywood's new power center, officially shifting power from linear TV to algorithm-driven global distribution and redefining profitability in an era where originals cost $200M+ each. Who would have thought that the company that first started with renting out movies to take down Blockbuster would turn into all this?

- At just 29, former ballerina Luana Lopes Lara has reached billionaire status after her prediction‑market startup Kalshi hit an $11 billion valuation. Her journey from grueling ballet training in Brazil to interning for financial giants like Ray Dalio and Ken Griffin, and then co-founding a fintech platform at MIT, is unique to say the least.
- Michael Jordan, co-owner of 23XI Racing, is set to testify in a high profile antitrust trial against NASCAR, which alleges that the league’s charter system unfairly restricts team autonomy and revenue potential. The lawsuit, filed jointly with Front Row Motorsports, argues that NASCAR’s policies create a monopolistic environment that disadvantages smaller teams. Early testimony from co-owner Denny Hamlin described the charter deal as a “death certificate” for teams, highlighting the high costs of operating in the Cup Series. If the plaintiffs prevail, the verdict could force NASCAR to overhaul or dismantle its charter system, fundamentally reshaping the structure and competitive landscape of stock car racing.
- Shoppers went all out this year, with online sales hitting a record $11.8 billion. The surge highlights the growing dominance of e-commerce during the holiday season, as consumers increasingly opt for digital deals over in-store shopping. The record-breaking spending underscores the continuing shift toward online holiday shopping in an ever-evolving consumerism landscape.
Outliers by Malcom Gladwell

Malcolm Gladwell is brilliant. In this classic, he digs into why certain people achieve extraordinary success while others, equally talented, don’t. Instead of focusing on pure “genius,” Gladwell looks at the hidden factors, like culture, timing, upbringing, and opportunity, that shape high achievers. His central idea is that success is never just an individual accomplishment; it’s the product of context plus effort.
One of the most memorable concepts in the book is the 10,000-Hour Rule, the notion that world class expertise comes from roughly 10,000 hours of deliberate practice. Gladwell illustrates this with examples like The Beatles and Bill Gates, showing how early access and unusual opportunities set them up to log those hours. He also explores how birth dates, cultural legacies, and even immigration patterns quietly shape people’s paths, challenging the myth of the self-made success story.
Gladwell writes in a narrative, storytelling style that makes research feel like conversation, not lecture (I for one am very grateful for this). Whether or not you agree with all his conclusions, the book is excellent at getting you to ask better questions: How much of my success is “me,” and how much is my environment? And what would it look like to create more opportunities, especially for people who don’t usually get them? Do yourself a favor and check this one out if you haven’t yet.
